Andes, Chile Best time: early October to late November Heading for the mighty Chilean Andes. Within a short distance of Santiago, the mighty Andes rise to heights of over 6000 metres above sea level and boast some of the most incredible terrain and snow conditions in South America. Ambitious skiers looking to push their comfort zones will meet their match while those looking for some easier turns will have plenty of options to choose from as well. The alpine ski terrain offers an exciting assortment of open bowls, steep couloirs, and mellow glacier runs. Aspen, Colorado (USA) Best time: December to February In the rarefied air and fresh fallen snow, high up in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains lies Aspen, America’s best skiing. Aspen provides the travellers a world-class mountain slope that caters to all levels of skiers and riders. From downtown Aspen, Colorado, guests to the Roaring Fork Valley can experience four mountains within minutes of one another. The wonderfully Victorian throwback architecture in downtown Aspen offers a glimpse into the Elk Mountains' storied mining-boom era. Expert skiing is what Aspen Mountain, or "Ajax Mountain" and Aspen Highlands are known for. There is no better place for top-to-bottom runs thanks to Ajax’ Silver Queen Gondola’s almost 1-kilometre vertical ascent. Aspen Mountain is famous for its long, steep mogul runs and challenging fall-line. Chamonix, France Best time: January to March At the foot of Mont Blanc, Chamonix’s one of the oldest and most prestigious resorts in France and hosted the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924. The 150km area is relatively small compared to others in the country, but its range of challenging terrain and red and black runs is unbeatable for experienced skiers. The ultimate must-do is the 20km Vallée Blanche, one of the most famous off-piste routes in the world. If you’re more of an intermediate, explore the blues around Le Tour, Les Houches and Brévent-Flégère. Legendary Chamonix should be on any ski or snowboard bucket list. Chamonix has an allure for the hard core & adventurous, with world renowned off-piste skiing and freeriding. Some of the lines are so challenging that one may need to wear a diaper (or nappy, incontinence pad) to avoid embarrassment! The area is dominated by the highest mountain in Western Europe, 4810m Mont Blanc. It serves as a playground for extreme sports enthusiasts and the ooh aah brigade. Between ice climbing, paragliding and extreme skiing, it is not surprising that Chamonix has been described as the "the death-sport capital of the world"! One must only view the engineering for the amazing Aiguille du Midi cable cars in order to comprehend those parts of Chamonix are on the edge. Courchevel, France Best time: mid-December to February Have access to the largest ski area in the world. Courchevel is one the most glamorous ski areas in Les Trois Vallées, with a lift system linking to Meribel and Val Thorens, guests can enjoy access to one of the most exciting and extensive ski areas in the world, truly a destination for the ski enthusiasts. The freshly groomed slopes, breathtaking views across to Mount Blanc, guaranteed snow and terrain that caters for skiing or boarding abilities all mount up to why this is the jewel of alpine skiing. If you have a passion for memorable dining experiences, then rejoice! Courchevel is almost as world-famous for its epicurean delicacies as it is for its pristine slopes. It offers a multitude of family-friendly fun, including learning to ski, snowboarding and snowshoeing, sledging and night skiing. For a little bit more adventure, why not try a husky dog-sled ride or heliskiing. Denali, Alaska Best time: February to April Alaska offers endless spectacular adventures, one of them being top notch skiing. Holding more than 1 million acres of skiing terrain and with over 15 meters of light snow each winter season, Alaska offers some of the most exciting winter activities. From heli skiing and boarding, to snowshoeing and ice fishing. The endless terrain and colossal vertical feet paired with expert guides and pilots make heli skiing in Alaska unparalleled. Whether you are an intermediate skier or a world-class carver. The Tordrillo Mountains are one of the most pristine ski areas in Alaska and offer some of the most diverse and exciting skiing, heli-skiing and snowboarding terrain in the world, with over 1.2 million acres of terrain and 15 meters of snow each season. Runs top out at 2290 meters and end at 600 meters with spectacular panoramic views of Denali and volcanic summits. Winter temperatures average -12 to -3 degrees Celsius with powder snow and corn snow. Dolomites, Italy Best time: December to end-March Unique in so many ways, this jagged ridge of 18 limestone peaks stitches together a region vastly independent from the rest of the Alps, like the bohemian branch of a grand old aristocratic family. All this distilled Alpine gorgeousness are the rifugi, traditional cosy mountain huts sprinkled across the valleys, villages, and slopes that act as restaurant and café in one, offering delicious cuisine and the requisite espresso hit between ski runs. The area’s 1207 kilometre of gently sloped terrain, which is often blanketed in dry, powdery snow are protected from the tempestuous northerly storms, chances are you’ll get a cloudless sky (there are 300 glorious sun-flooded days a year here, said to be more than anywhere else in the Alps). The vast Dolomiti Super ski Area has long been a draw for pro skiers and powder-hunting freerides, with heli-skiing options among the craggy peaks of the Sella Ronda. But the South Tyrol area in general is about so much more than skiing. To the east, the pine-covered, craggy Alta Badia valley has an ancient Ladin culture and serious locavore food, from centuries-old agritourism’s to the three-Michelin-starred St Hubertus. Greenland Heli-skiing Best time: late-March to mid-May Greenland is one of the most spectacular places to ski in the world, offering skiing at its purest and most thrilling. Nowhere else can you drop from summit to sea in a single descent. A snow-capped wilderness with deep untracked powder and glacial runs dropping as much as 2000 metres to the fjords below awaits. With a helicopter to lift you from your yacht’s helipad high up into the most heavily glaciated, dramatic mountains imaginable, you can spend a day of sensational skiing, then return to the comfort of your waiting yacht. While the waters off the east of Greenland are dense with sea ice, most heliskiing yacht charters focus on the wild west coast of Greenland. There’s some world-class backcountry skiing around Maniitsoq Island, home to colourful little clapboard villages, pristine rivers, and pods of visiting humpback whales. Maniitsoq Island opens the gates to vast and deep fjords encompassing the most beautiful mountains in the region, including the 100km-long, endlessly forking inlet that is Eternity Fjord, where glacier upon glacier pours down from towering peaks. Iceland (Northern) Best time: February to June When the snow starts melting in Europe you head to Northern Iceland, where the deep and cold snowpack stay well into June, making it perfect for skiing spring powder all the way to sea level. The best skiing in the mountains & fjords across the Atlantic Ocean is made by helicopter, take your alpine experience to another level. Long descents over the North Atlantic Ocean are punctuated by never ending sunsets. Skiing in Iceland is an exceptional experience. Heli-assisted ascents leading to wide, open bowls and limitless terrain ignites new exploration in even the most seasoned of skiers. Long daylight hours allow us to choose the best time of day to ski given the weather and snow conditions. Early season and stormy periods equal powder skiing in a maritime climate, while long sunny days transition the snow into perfect corn skiing. Japan Best time: January & early-February Japan is truly the holy grail for skiers who love to ski deep powder snow and beautiful trees, the snow in Japan is super light, extraordinarily dry and unbelievably fun to ski or ride. No matter if you travel to Hokkaido, Hakuba or Niseko, the mountains are known for frequent snowfall, in addition to the great snow, Japan offers a welcoming and unique culture, a variety of incredible food from incredible sushi to Ramen, and an overall ski vacation experience that you just won’t find anywhere else. The adrenaline junkies won’t think twice when they experience the quality of the snow in Japan. For those looking to take a break from the powder, most resorts also have plenty of groomed runs and night skiing is also very popular. Lyngen Alps, Norway Best time: March & April Imagine standing on the top of a snowy summit in the Lyngen Alps of northern Norway. You look down at the fjord with the sunshine sparkling. You adjust your equipment one last time, then head down the slope, making a first descent of untouched snow that take you from summit to sea. The Lyngen Alps are about 90km long & 20km wide with the highest point being 1,833m above sea level - literally! The range includes glaciers, steep couloirs, gentle bowls & some tree-skiing down low. Summits typically skied in the Lyngen Alps are less than 1200m altitude, with descents going all the way down to sea level. Another of Lyngen Alps geographical benefits is shared with much of the Arctic - its proximity to the stunning phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis. St. Anton & Arlberg, Austria Best time: January to March Located in the heart of one of the snowiest places in Europe, St Anton am Arlberg is a premier ski destination that is difficult for other ski regions to rival. St Anton has vast off-piste terrain plus consistent, deep snowpack and powder. It is particularly popular with expert skiers, but equally enjoyed by families and intermediates. St Anton has something for everyone but is an especially good experience for advanced skiers. Even though there are relatively few black runs on-piste, the off-piste routes & freeride terrain is vast. For extreme riders, the tight chutes near the Valluga summit and other areas will scare the pants off most. The village of St Anton is cosy with a distinct Austrian charm, in contrast to the vibrant St Anton après & party atmosphere. You come for the skiing; you stay for the world-renowned nightlife! St. Moritz, Switzerland Best time: December to March A particular humour, an appreciation of the finer things, but perhaps above all an elegantly madcap eccentricity. This is a place of moonlight ice-skating and Cresta Run sledding; of cricket, polo and skijoring behind galloping horses on the frozen St Moritzersee. Silliness anywhere else, perhaps, but somehow civilised here. There’s nothing more thrilling than seeing St. Moritz’s closest mountain, Corviglia, covered in radiant white powder snow. Corviglia is not only the birthplace of Alpine winter sports, but it is also responsible for the start of winter tourism over 150 years ago. St. Moritz is one of the best winter sports regions in the world, so it’s no surprise that it has already hosted two Winter Olympic Games and five Alpine Ski World Championships. Altogether, the region boasts an incredible 87 pistes that all conform to World Cup quality standards. Experience the difference for yourself. Verbier, Switzerland Best time: end-November to February With its sunny slopes, devastating scenery, exciting skiing and lively après ski, Verbier, Switzerland, is rightly lauded as one of the must-visit resorts in the world. Verbier is the principal resort in Switzerland's extensive 4 Valleys (4 Vallées) ski domain, which stretches from the ski area of Bruson, just south of Verbier, all the way to the slopes of Thyon-Les-Collons above the town of Sion. The vast majority of Verbier's ski area is comprised of high-altitude terrain well above the tree line. This is a serious high-mountain ski area where the focus is on off-piste and freeriding, with many marked routes left ungroomed to preserve the powder lines and to allow mogul fields to develop. Verbier is one of the very few ski resorts in the world to feature a lift-served peak that doesn't have any pisted runs at all; the only routes off the summit of Mont Gele are itineraires, which are way-marked runs that are never groomed. Verbier is not for the fainthearted. Wanaka, New Zealand Best time: August & September With long winters in the mountains, awe-inspiring destinations, and a unique ski culture, New Zealand defiantly deserves a spot on your winter sports bucket list. An estimated 97% of the world’s water is found in the ocean. Because of this, the ocean has considerable impact on weather, temperature, and the food supply of humans and other organisms. Despite its size and impact on the lives of every organism on Earth, the ocean remains one of the biggest mysteries in the world. More than 80% of the ocean has never been mapped, explored, or even seen by humans. A far greater percentage of the surfaces of the moon and the planet Mars has been mapped and studied than of our own ocean floor. Conservation and preservation of our biodiversity stands at the core of our ethos. With every great adventure or family vacation we design and carry out, we make sure local communities and conservation projects benefit from our journeys. With rising sea temperatures and increasing pollution threatening the health of the ocean, there is an urgent need for scientists to access some of the world’s most remote areas. Believe or not trash already accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. Floating plastics trapped in the patches will keep circulating until they break down into smaller and smaller pieces, becoming harder to clean up and increasingly easier to mistake for food by Sealife. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies for decades or even centuries. The decree will expand protections by 60.000 square kilometres (23.166 square miles); half of which will be fully protected where no extractive activities are allowed, and the efforts of Mission Blue had a significant impact on this initiative. But we notice that we are all quick to jump to the Northern Hemisphere for a spot of heli-assisted adventure or an epic ski touring escape, without knowing how much the Southern hemisphere has to offer. The Andes Mountain range that straddles the border of Chile and Argentina. Giving thrill-seekers an alternating season to the top half of the globe, Chile is renowned for its perfect balance of touring terrain and some of the Southern Hemisphere’s healthiest snowfall depths. The famous Chugach range in Alaska has 750000 acres permitted for heli-ski operators, only a handful of groups of five people are allowed to ski it daily. That means fresh, unbroken powder on just about every run and a more exclusive skiing experience. The Chugach Mountains receive an annual average of nearly 700 inches of snow and has a reputation for iconic big lines. Russia likely wouldn’t usually spring to mind as the type of place you would like to go skiing but the wilderness of the former Soviet Union’s Far East is overlooked when it comes to heli-skiing. The end-of-the-earth, Kamchatka Peninsula, is located between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea is home to the greatest concentration of active volcanoes anywhere on the planet. Along with the raw, breathtaking scenery, Kamchatka’s mountainous region is covered in delicious white powder during the winter, making it a perfect heli-skiing destination for those who want to shred snow that’s never been shredded before. Thinking about Turkey, skiing isn’t necessarily the first activity that comes to mind. Which makes the Kaçkar mountain range a well-guarded secret. Located in the north-eastern reaches of Turkey, the mountains are harried by frequent storms blowing off the Black Sea, which result in amazingly fresh, deep snow. The highest point is 3937 meters, which is a hell of a descent. Japan’s north, Hokkaido’s huge mountainous expanse experiences up to 30 metres of super high-quality snow during the peak of the season, making it your dreamland for heli-skiing. Surrounded by dormant volcanoes and skeleton forests covered in white snow. Head to the top of the 1100-meter Shiribetsu-Dake volcano. But be warned, this one is not for amateurs, with the average run over 650 meters long and encountering some steep sections with wicked curves. Japan is known for having too much snow, meaning bluebirds are rare. Choose wisely. Head even more south for the stunning views of the 17 mountain ranges of New Zealand’s Southern Alps that provides a stunning 8288 square kilometers of epic skiing terrain, with typical runs landing between 600 and 1000 meters with over 800 diverse runs and endless fresh lines combined with a gourmet picnic on the mountain and access to the highest terrain at 2585 meters, there definetely will not be any shortage of untouched snow. A little bit further, 65°S, you will find the 7th continent, Antarctica. It remains the only unspoiled continent on our planet. Almost entirely covered in a permanent ice cap that reaches as much as 4776 meters. The Antarctic peninsula is highly mountainous, its highest peaks rising to about 2800 meters. Notable peaks on the peninsula include Mount Castro, Mount Coman, Mount Gilbert and Mount Jackson, which is the highest point at 3184 meters above sea level. Azores (Portugal) Consisting of 9 beautiful islands, the Azores Archipelago boasts a variety of geographical diversity filled with high-octane activities. Each island features unique sceneries, cuisine, and cultural charm. Located in the volcanic Atlantic between Europe and North America, this Portuguese island group has developed its own special identity throughout its dynamic history, and today boasts natural beauty. The underwater realm of the Azores present divers with intriguing topography and diversity of dive sites. A subtropical oceanic climate combines with the rich waters of the Gulf Stream, creating a healthy ecosystem that is rich with marine life. The Azores serve as a veritable beacon for whales. Resident sperm whales are joined by migratory blue, fin, humpback, minke, and sei whales plus orcas and several species of dolphins. The peak of whale spotting season is early spring. The Azores is also an up-and-coming destination for shark diving especially with the beautiful blue and mako shark in these deep blue waters. Manta rays are also prevalent in these outstanding depths, along with occasional whale sharks, hammerheads, and a wide array of large fish. Cocos Island (Costa Rica) [Photograph by Flip Nicklin] When the topic is diving, Cocos Island will absolutely be mentioned in that conservation. Known as one of the most extraordinary places to dive, it is also a highly protected UNESCO world heritage site. The uninhabited Island, 550 km (340 miles) west of the Pacific shore of Costa Rica, and halfway to the Galapagos Islands, offers divers exceptional marine splendour. With a rich history of pirates, whalers, Tongan captives and German adventurers, scuba diving at Cocos Island truly earned the spot on the world map as a top diving destination, with supreme shark experiences in a Pacific playground for schooling hammerheads, manta rays, whale sharks, endangered sea turtles, humpback whales and many more. With the correct weather conditions, it promises diving schedules as many as 3 or 4 dives per day, to explore these ocean waters that are exploding with sea life and ready to unlock unforgettable experiences. Coral Triangle The only region where all together, new and unimaginable forms of life, may perhaps be found. Coral reefs account for less than 1% of ocean floor yet they are home to more than twenty 25% of marine life. In a time when much of world’s reefs are dying due to ocean acidification and rising of sea temperature, less than 1% of the world’s reefs are in a pristine state. The world’s finest reefs can be found within the Coral Triangle of Indonesia, where the Pacific and Indian Oceans converge. Marine scientists recorded over 76% of all known hard coral species and 52% of identified Indo-Pacific reef fish species within this region. When combining both land and sea-based species, Indonesia ranks number one in the world. The diversity goes beyond the kaleidoscopic coral reefs and reef fish. The larger pelagic species can be seen constantly on the move to hunt prey. This includes oceanic manta rays, the great hammerhead shark, the giant sun fish, and the thresher shark as well as the world’s largest living animal, the blue whale and the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. Ningaloo Reef (Australia) Located 1.200 km north of Perth, sits a hidden magical place where words simply cannot do justice. Ningaloo Reef, the world’s largest fringing coral reef, awaits. This 260 km long spectacle is just a few salt-watery steps from the exceptional eco-luxe safari tents of Sal Salis. This place is magical because it is truly the rarest of places, where outback, reef and ranges meet and merge; amidst a spectrum of colour for which, only nature has the palette. Between May to October, migrating humpbacks are drawn through Ningaloo Marine Park. Whale sharks, blue whales, southern right whales, orcas, turtles, mantas, and a range of dolphin species are also part of the reef’s oceanic menagerie. A natural symphony that only happens here. A reminder that this world can still astonish. A world even greater and more beautiful exists. The moment you submerge into the realm of whale sharks and humpback whale, your life changes. The whale shark season runs from mid-March to July. Revillagigedo Islands This is the place for high octane diving. Exciting, demanding and, for the experienced diver, very rewarding. The Revillagigedo Islands are located south-west of Cabo San Lucas, at the tip of Baja California. There are few other destinations in the world where we can encounter such an impressive array of “big beasts” – humpback whales, giant manta rays, hammerhead sharks, dolphins, tuna, pelagic fish, and many other shark species. At Guadalupe Island you can get an encounter with great white sharks in superb visibility. The “closest’ island to the mainland is San Benedicto, 390 km offshore, which has become famous among divers around the world for the dive known as El Boiler – a pinnacle covered in corals and patrolled by manta rays and sharks. Nearly 50 km to the south of San Benedicto lies Socorro Island. Also known as the aquarium, Socorro has manta ray cleaning stations as well as several pinnacles where schools of hammerhead sharks are often seen and bottlenose dolphins visit sites, such as Cabo Pearce, almost daily and long encounters are a frequent occurrence. Around 315 km to the west of Socorro is the infrequently visited Clarion Island. Not much is known about Clarion other than it is still relatively unexplored. Tonga The friendly Islands, also known as Tonga, are called the Friendly Islands because of its friendly reception toward Captain Cook during his first visit in 1773. The Islands exist out of 169 islands located in the Southern Pacific Ocean. Stretching over 800 kilometres and with a total surface area of 750 km2, only 96 of these islands are inhabited. Tonga lies South of Samoa, about a third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii. Tonga is known as one of the few places in the world where you can swim on a safe distance with humpback whales. These magnificent creatures pass through the islands between the months of July and October to mate and give birth. They then leave for their Arctic feeding grounds. In addition to humpback whales, divers can encounter manta rays, eagle rays, many shark species, and other diverse marine life in the area. The underwater geography is just as diverse as its marine life; with dive sites containing everything from coral gardens to caverns and vertical walls, Tonga truly has something for everyone. Tubbataha Reefs (Palawan) The tubbataha Reefs is an UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Sulu Sea to the east of Palawan, Philippines. The region's remote location along with challenging access make it one of the healthiest and least exploited areas of reef in the world, exciting out of 100.000 hectares of the spectacular reef system. Diving these reefs is very limited and controlled because they are so protected for very good reasons, when you can explore these magical waters, you will discover a wide array of pristine coral gardens mixed with steep walls dropping down into the deep blue. Tubbataha park area is an important fish spawning and breeding site and is significant in terms of global marine life species diversity and richness. Tubbataha is the best diving spot in the Philippines, and one of the most biodiverse diving spots on earth. Tubbataha is home to no less than 600 species of fish, 360 species of corals (about 50% of the coral species in the world), 11 species of sharks (including tiger sharks, whale sharks, and whitetips), 13 species of dolphins, and whales, nesting hawksbill and green sea turtles. You can also see manta rays, schools of barracuda and tuna, and smaller marine life like nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, and frogfish. Amos Rock is often cited as the best dive site in Tubbataha, boasting colourful soft corals, massive schools of fish, large reef sharks and a gorgonian-covered wall.
