Azores (Portugal) Consisting of 9 beautiful islands, the Azores Archipelago boasts a variety of geographical diversity filled with high-octane activities. Each island features unique sceneries, cuisine, and cultural charm. Located in the volcanic Atlantic between Europe and North America, this Portuguese island group has developed its own special identity throughout its dynamic history, and today boasts natural beauty. The underwater realm of the Azores present divers with intriguing topography and diversity of dive sites. A subtropical oceanic climate combines with the rich waters of the Gulf Stream, creating a healthy ecosystem that is rich with marine life. The Azores serve as a veritable beacon for whales. Resident sperm whales are joined by migratory blue, fin, humpback, minke, and sei whales plus orcas and several species of dolphins. The peak of whale spotting season is early spring. The Azores is also an up-and-coming destination for shark diving especially with the beautiful blue and mako shark in these deep blue waters. Manta rays are also prevalent in these outstanding depths, along with occasional whale sharks, hammerheads, and a wide array of large fish. Cocos Island (Costa Rica) [Photograph by Flip Nicklin] When the topic is diving, Cocos Island will absolutely be mentioned in that conservation. Known as one of the most extraordinary places to dive, it is also a highly protected UNESCO world heritage site. The uninhabited Island, 550 km (340 miles) west of the Pacific shore of Costa Rica, and halfway to the Galapagos Islands, offers divers exceptional marine splendour. With a rich history of pirates, whalers, Tongan captives and German adventurers, scuba diving at Cocos Island truly earned the spot on the world map as a top diving destination, with supreme shark experiences in a Pacific playground for schooling hammerheads, manta rays, whale sharks, endangered sea turtles, humpback whales and many more. With the correct weather conditions, it promises diving schedules as many as 3 or 4 dives per day, to explore these ocean waters that are exploding with sea life and ready to unlock unforgettable experiences. Coral Triangle The only region where all together, new and unimaginable forms of life, may perhaps be found. Coral reefs account for less than 1% of ocean floor yet they are home to more than twenty 25% of marine life. In a time when much of world’s reefs are dying due to ocean acidification and rising of sea temperature, less than 1% of the world’s reefs are in a pristine state. The world’s finest reefs can be found within the Coral Triangle of Indonesia, where the Pacific and Indian Oceans converge. Marine scientists recorded over 76% of all known hard coral species and 52% of identified Indo-Pacific reef fish species within this region. When combining both land and sea-based species, Indonesia ranks number one in the world. The diversity goes beyond the kaleidoscopic coral reefs and reef fish. The larger pelagic species can be seen constantly on the move to hunt prey. This includes oceanic manta rays, the great hammerhead shark, the giant sun fish, and the thresher shark as well as the world’s largest living animal, the blue whale and the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. Ningaloo Reef (Australia) Located 1.200 km north of Perth, sits a hidden magical place where words simply cannot do justice. Ningaloo Reef, the world’s largest fringing coral reef, awaits. This 260 km long spectacle is just a few salt-watery steps from the exceptional eco-luxe safari tents of Sal Salis. This place is magical because it is truly the rarest of places, where outback, reef and ranges meet and merge; amidst a spectrum of colour for which, only nature has the palette. Between May to October, migrating humpbacks are drawn through Ningaloo Marine Park. Whale sharks, blue whales, southern right whales, orcas, turtles, mantas, and a range of dolphin species are also part of the reef’s oceanic menagerie. A natural symphony that only happens here. A reminder that this world can still astonish. A world even greater and more beautiful exists. The moment you submerge into the realm of whale sharks and humpback whale, your life changes. The whale shark season runs from mid-March to July. Revillagigedo Islands This is the place for high octane diving. Exciting, demanding and, for the experienced diver, very rewarding. The Revillagigedo Islands are located south-west of Cabo San Lucas, at the tip of Baja California. There are few other destinations in the world where we can encounter such an impressive array of “big beasts” – humpback whales, giant manta rays, hammerhead sharks, dolphins, tuna, pelagic fish, and many other shark species. At Guadalupe Island you can get an encounter with great white sharks in superb visibility. The “closest’ island to the mainland is San Benedicto, 390 km offshore, which has become famous among divers around the world for the dive known as El Boiler – a pinnacle covered in corals and patrolled by manta rays and sharks. Nearly 50 km to the south of San Benedicto lies Socorro Island. Also known as the aquarium, Socorro has manta ray cleaning stations as well as several pinnacles where schools of hammerhead sharks are often seen and bottlenose dolphins visit sites, such as Cabo Pearce, almost daily and long encounters are a frequent occurrence. Around 315 km to the west of Socorro is the infrequently visited Clarion Island. Not much is known about Clarion other than it is still relatively unexplored. Tonga The friendly Islands, also known as Tonga, are called the Friendly Islands because of its friendly reception toward Captain Cook during his first visit in 1773. The Islands exist out of 169 islands located in the Southern Pacific Ocean. Stretching over 800 kilometres and with a total surface area of 750 km2, only 96 of these islands are inhabited. Tonga lies South of Samoa, about a third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii. Tonga is known as one of the few places in the world where you can swim on a safe distance with humpback whales. These magnificent creatures pass through the islands between the months of July and October to mate and give birth. They then leave for their Arctic feeding grounds. In addition to humpback whales, divers can encounter manta rays, eagle rays, many shark species, and other diverse marine life in the area. The underwater geography is just as diverse as its marine life; with dive sites containing everything from coral gardens to caverns and vertical walls, Tonga truly has something for everyone. Tubbataha Reefs (Palawan) The tubbataha Reefs is an UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Sulu Sea to the east of Palawan, Philippines. The region's remote location along with challenging access make it one of the healthiest and least exploited areas of reef in the world, exciting out of 100.000 hectares of the spectacular reef system. Diving these reefs is very limited and controlled because they are so protected for very good reasons, when you can explore these magical waters, you will discover a wide array of pristine coral gardens mixed with steep walls dropping down into the deep blue. Tubbataha park area is an important fish spawning and breeding site and is significant in terms of global marine life species diversity and richness. Tubbataha is the best diving spot in the Philippines, and one of the most biodiverse diving spots on earth. Tubbataha is home to no less than 600 species of fish, 360 species of corals (about 50% of the coral species in the world), 11 species of sharks (including tiger sharks, whale sharks, and whitetips), 13 species of dolphins, and whales, nesting hawksbill and green sea turtles. You can also see manta rays, schools of barracuda and tuna, and smaller marine life like nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, and frogfish. Amos Rock is often cited as the best dive site in Tubbataha, boasting colourful soft corals, massive schools of fish, large reef sharks and a gorgonian-covered wall. Washing Machine in the North Atoll is known for some of the best visibility within the marine park and is home to grey reef sharks and plenty of tropical reef fish. You might even see a whale shark or two if you're lucky! Black Rock in the South Atoll is a popular dive spot for whitetip sharks, rays and schools of grouper and giant trevally. Het is geen geheim voor de wereld dat Marsel van Oosten een van de grootste fotografen ter wereld is, onlangs hadden we de uitgelezen kans om hem enkele vragen te stellen over zijn werk. Na zijn afstuderen aan de Academie van Beeldende Kunsten met een BA in Art Direction en Grafische Vormgeving, begon de in Nederland geboren Marsel van Oosten een carrière in de reclame. Als Art Director bij verschillende bekende bureaus won hij talloze prijzen voor zijn werk, waaronder een zilveren en twee gouden leeuwen op het prestigieuze International Advertising Festival in Cannes. De veelgeprezen tv-commercial die hij maakte voor een Nederlandse natuurbeschermingsorganisatie is representatief voor zowel zijn creatieve en emotionele benadering van communicatie, als voor zijn liefde voor de natuur en zijn zorg voor het milieu. Marsel’s beelden staan bekend om zijn beheersing van compositie, belichting, kleur en perspectief. In zijn werk probeert hij te vereenvoudigen, het vreemde weg te werken: eenvoud is de ultieme verfijning. Naast het winnen van de algemene titels zoals Wildlife fotograaf van het jaar, Reis fotograaf van het jaar en International Natuur fotograaf van het jaar(2x), behaalde hij onder meer de eerste prijs in de Europese natuurfotograaf van het jaar, de eerste prijs in Nature's Best International fotograaf Awards, twee eerste prijzen voor de reisfotograaf van het jaar en verschillende prijzen voor de natuurfotograaf van het jaar. Zijn afbeeldingen zijn te zien in galeries en musea, worden wereldwijd gebruikt in advertenties en design, en hij levert regelmatig bijdragen aan National Geographic. Waar komt u passie voor fotografie vandaan? Ik ben altijd al een liefhebber van de natuur geweest. Toen ik klein was trok ik vaak met mijn ouders de bossen in voor lange wandelingen. Thuis keken we vaak naar natuurfilms en documentaires over dieren. Toch duurde het heel lang voordat ik serieus begon te fotograferen. Op de kunstacademie vond ik er niets aan, dus toen heb ik het keuzevak genegeerd. Nadat ik afgestudeerd was in grafische vormgeving and art direction, kreeg ik een baan als art director bij een groot reclamebureau. In de vijftien jaar die volgden heb ik heel veel samengewerkt met fotografen die ik had geselecteerd om mijn campagnes te fotograferen. Daardoor stond ik regelmatig op foto shoots en daar heb ik heel veel van geleerd. Ook leerde ik toen fotografie veel meer waarderen, en uiteindelijk kocht ik zelf ook een camera om op vakanties mee te fotograferen. Al snel kwam ik erachter dat mijn foto’s niet erg goed waren, waarna ik besloot om mij er meer in te verdiepen. Vervolgens werd het een serieuze hobby die uiteindelijk volledig uit de hand liep. De laatste drie jaar van mijn carriere in de reclame had ik mijn eigen reclamebureau wat behoorlijk wat stress met zich meebracht. Natuurfotografie werd voor mij de manier om te ontsnappen aan die stress. Op een gegeven moment vroeg ik mij af of ik niet beter fotograaf kon worden omdat ik daar een stuk blijer van leek te worden. Wanneer was het punt dat u fotografie en avontuur ging combineren? Toen mijn vrouw en ik op huwelijksreis gingen, kozen we voor een safari in Tanzania. Dat was voor mij de eerste keer dat ik voet zette in Afrika, en de eerste keer dat ik wilde dieren fotografeerde. Het heeft een onuitwisbare indruk op mij gemaakt, en ik wist vanaf dat moment zeker dat ik daar mijn werk van wilde maken. Ik wist dat dat niet makkelijk zou zijn omdat er vijftien jaar geleden ook al niet veel geld te verdienen viel in mijn fotografiegenre. Tijdens een brainstormsessie met mijn vrouw Daniella besloten we om gespecialiseerde natuurfotografiereizen over de hele wereld te gaan organiseren. Dat vond op dat moment nog slechts op zeer kleine schaal plaats, dus wij zagen daar veel mogelijkheden. Het bleek de juiste keuze, want al vanaf de start van ons bedrijf liepen de zaken heel goed. Ons uitgangspunt is altijd geweest dat we alleen maar dingen doen waar we blij van worden. Dat is een goed strategie gebleken. Op het moment dat we een reis niet meer leuk vinden, dan gooien we ‘m eruit, ook al is het financieel onverstandig om dat te doen. We houden allebei van fotografie, van dieren en de natuur, en van reizen, dus dit is de perfecte combinatie voor ons. Wat is de meest spectaculaire expeditie / reis ervaring die u mee gemaakt heeft? Het is moeilijk om reizen met elkaar te vergelijken omdat ze allemaal op hun eigen manier heel bijzonder zijn. Echt spectaculair vond ik onze expeditie in de Sahara dwars door Algerije, Libië, en Tsjaad. Dat zou ik graag nog een keer doen als de rust in de regio weer is teruggekeerd. Ook mijn meest recente expeditie naar Socotra, Jemen, was een bijzondere ervaring. Niet in de laatste plaats omdat er een burgeroorlog woedt en de reis daarom bepaald niet ongevaarlijk was. Wat is uw droomreis? Ik zou uiteindelijk graag nog een keer met een overland truck de wereld over willen rijden, op zoek naar onbekende stukjes wildernis. (Nu de vraag die iedereen wil weten ) wat u perfecte camera setup om dieren in het wild te fotograferen? Er bestaat geen perfecte setup, omdat de dieren en de omstandigheden altijd verschillen. Als dieren heel schuw zijn, dan heb ik lange telelenzen nodig, maar als ze relaxed zijn dan kan ik soms zelfs een groothoeklens gebruiken. In principe hou ik er het meest van om dieren in hun natuurlijke leefomgeving te laten zien, met veel aandacht voor de schoonheid van de habitat. Mijn ideale natuurfoto is eigenlijk een mooie landschapsfoto met een dier erin. Dat betekent dat ik het liefs met wat kortere lenzen schiet omdat ik dan meer van het landschap kan laten zien. Een 24-70/2.8 of een 70-200/2.8 zijn daar ideale lenzen voor. Maar in de praktijk gebruik ik voor mijn dierenfotografie het meeste mijn 180-400/4.0 met ingebouwde 1.4x teleconverter. Meestal is het namelijk niet mogelijk om dicht genoeg bij wilde dieren te komen om korte lenzen te gebruiken. Zit er nog iets spannends voor u in het vergiet voor in de toekomst? Jazeker. Ik ben momenteel bezig met een nieuw boek: MOTHER (a Tribute to Mother Earth). Het wordt een visuele ode aan de natuur, en een overzicht van mijn beste werk van de afgelopen 15 jaar. Maar liefst 394 pagina’s en 244 foto’s, dus echt een lijvig boek. Ik heb er inmiddels al ruim 10 maanden aan gewerkt, en ik ben erg blij met het resultaat. Op 22 april is het wereldwijd verkrijgbaar. Daarnaast hebben we al onze fotoreizen van 2020 moeten doorschuiven naar 2021 en 2022, terwijl die jaren al bijna vol zaten. De komen twee jaar staan voor ons dan ook in het teken van nonstop reizen en fotograferen met ook een aantal nieuwe bestemming waar we erg naar uitkijken. All we have is now. - Marlon Brando - “Ia ora na e manava” - Voel je gekoesterd op de eilanden van Frans-Polynesië. Het archipel van Frans-Polynesië bestaat uit 121 eilanden waarvan er ruim 70 nog steeds bewoond zijn, elk met hun eigen magische en boeiende charme, idyllisch kristalhelder water, afgelegen jungle en eeuwenoude cultuur. Deze eilanden hebben een lange en rijke geschiedenis. De eilanden werden al in 500 voor Christus voor het eerst bewoond door migrerende Polynesiërs. Ze werden later ontdekt door de Portugese ontdekkingsreiziger Fernão de Magelhães in 1520, waar hij tijdens het varen naar de Filippijnen onder de indruk raakte van het atol Puka Puka in de Tuamotu-archipel. Nog steeds maken deze eindeloze uitgestrekte witte zandstranden plaats voor de heldere turquoise oceaan. Het visleven in de Stille Zuidzee is zo indrukweekend en nergens anders zo dan in Frans-Polynesië. Een andere reden om deze archipel per jacht te verkennen zijn de specifieke duikcentra aan boord, waarop je elk moment je duikuitrusting kunt aantrekken en de onderwaterwereld van Frans-Polynesië kunt verkennen tezamen met de aanboord duik meester die je meeneemt naar enkele van de best verborgen duikplekken. Dit gedeelde van de wereld is een van de beste plekken ter wereld om te duiken. Verwacht unieke ontmoetingen met wilde dolfijnen, manta's, hamerhaaien, marlijnen en zelfs bultruggen. De Society Eilanden worden beschouwd als het juweel van de Zuidzee, met de beschermde turquoise lagune van Bora Bora precies in het midden. Het is een iconische bestemming geworden in de Stille Zuidzee, omringd door fascinerende koraalriffen en zeeleven dat fenomenale duikmogelijkheden biedt. Voor het eiland Raiatea ligt de driemastzeilboot Nordby, die in 1900 zonk. De romp is nog steeds in zeer goede staat, wat het tot een van de beste wrakken onder deze eilanden maakt, de thuisbasis van een verbazingwekkende hoeveelheid zeeleven van haaien tot kleurrijke naaktslakken. Of ga op anker bij de Fijische Mamanuca-eilanden, vlak bij Beachcomber Island, waar je het wrak van een Martin B-26 bommenwerper vindt. De Tuamotu-archipel bestaat uit meer dan 70 eilanden en atollen, een echte wereldberoemde duikbestemming. Tot deze UNESCO-eilanden behoren het op een na grootste atol ter wereld, Rangiroa, en het door UNESCO geclassificeerde biosfeerreservaat op het Toau-atol. Het beste voor duikliefhebbers: niet-duikende gasten kunnen snorkelen in het kalme water van de lagunes. Als u meer op zoek bent naar een ontsnapping op het land, hoeft u zich geen zorgen te maken. Spring in uw privéhelikopter voor een rondvlucht naar een privéparadijs. Tijdens het filmen van Mutiny on the Bounty in 1962 werd de legendarische acteur Marlon Brando verliefd op het naburige eiland van Tetiaroa, en The Brando werd geboren, een eco-resort met 35 adembenemende villa's aan het strand. Opgericht in 1977 door Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE , ter nagedachtenis aan haar overleden echtgenoot, de beroemde natuuronderzoeker en oprichter van het Tsavo Oost National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE , claimt de Sheldrick Wildlife Trust een rijke en diepgewortelde familiegeschiedenis op het gebied van natuur en natuurbehoud. In 1948 begon David Sheldrick zijn vermaarde carrière in de Royal National Parken van Kenia, waar hij meer dan twee decennia onwankelbaar werkte om Tsavo, een voorheen onontgonnen en onherbergzaam land, om te vormen tot het grootste en beroemdste nationale park van Kenia. David Sheldrick onderscheidt zich, zelfs vandaag de dag, als een van de beroemdste en meest bekwame pioniers van National Park Wardens in Afrika. De Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is vooral bekend om hun fenomenale werk met olifanten, waarbij ze het meest succesvolle redding en rehabilitatieprogramma voor weesolifanten ter wereld besturen. Hoewel het Orhans ’Project het hart van de organisatie is, kan het niet op zichzelf staan en heeft de Sheldrick Wildlife Trust de afgelopen 40 jaar een uitgebreide, veelzijdige benadering van natuurbehoud ontwikkeld om een grotere en langdurige impact voor dieren in het wild te garanderen. Via hun lucht-antistroperij en mobiele veterinaire eenheden beschermen ze continu en actief de natuurlijke omgeving van Kenia en bieden ze onmiddellijke hulp aan wilde dieren in nood. Hun beroemde Orhans ’Project stelt hen in staat om te reageren en verweesde babyolifanten, neushoorns en alle andere wilde diersoorten in heel Kenia te redden, zodat ze kunnen genieten van een leven terug in het wild als ze volwassen zijn. We hadden de geweldige kans om Angela Sheldrick een paar vragen te stellen. Angela, de dochter van David en Daphne Sheldrick, groeide op in de wildernis van oost Tsavo. Ze is haar hele leven blootgesteld aan de natuur en wildernis van Kenia, en leidt nu de David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust en al haar activiteiten in Kenia en doet dat sinds 2001. Met een familie-DNA zoals dat van jou, waar je vader en moeder pioniers zijn op het gebied van natuurbehoud, kan ik me alleen maar voorstellen welke geweldige levenslessen aan jou zijn doorgegeven. Welke waarden koester je het meest tot op de dag van vandaag? Toen ik opgroeide, ondergedompeld in de natuur, was mijn familie veel groter dan alleen de menselijke leden. Ik ben opgegroeid omringd door een eclectische verzameling wilde dieren, waaronder Bunty de impala, Jimmy de kudu en mijn speciale vriend, Baby de eland. In deze omgeving kon ik het niet helpen, maar kreeg ik een enorm respect voor onze natuurlijke wereld. Ik ben opgegroeid met de behoefte om het beter te doen voor al het leven dat onze prachtige wereld deelt en om een van mijn favoriete citaten van mijn moeder te gebruiken: "We hebben maar één huis, de aarde, en wij als de dominante soort moeten voor zorgen het." Dat betekent dagelijks geduld, empathie, vastberadenheid om met succes verweesde olifanten te rehabiliteren, moed en het vermogen om de bladzijde om te slaan wanneer, ondanks al onze inspanningen, een baby er misschien niet doorheen komt. Daphne werd nooit afgeschrikt door een uitdaging en wij ook niet, we nemen verweesde olifanten op waarvan weinigen denken dat ze zullen overleven, of een wilde toekomst hebben, zoals Rama, onze nieuwste redding die een ernstig gebogen olifantje is. Maar we moeten het altijd proberen. Dan is er de vernederende les dat we ondanks onze decennia van natuurbehoud nog veel te begrijpen hebben. Mijn vader, David Sheldrick, zei het het beste: “Hoe meer je van dieren weet, hoe meer je beseft hoeveel we nog moeten leren.” Ik heb mijn hele leven rond olifanten doorgebracht, maar ze blijven me op het allerbeste verbazen. We kunnen allemaal zoveel leren van deze sociale soorten, die toegewijd zijn aan familie en niets maakt me trotser dan het kijken naar de olifanten in actie: afhankelijke weeskinderen die nieuwsgierig wilde vrienden ontmoeten, stieren die luieren in het modderbad, ex-wezen die aankomen met hun gezinnen op sleeptouw, kalveren die tussen de benen van hun kindermeisjes wankelen. Simpel gezegd, ze blijven ons verbazen en we zullen nooit stoppen met onze inspanningen om ze te beschermen. Hoeveel re-integratiecentra heeft de David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT)? Het kan misschien helpen om eerst uit te leggen wat onze baanbrekende re-integratie-eenheden zijn en doen. Ons uiteindelijke doel is dat elk weeskind dat we redden, de overgang maakt van onze zorg naar het wild. Maar dit moet op het juiste moment zijn, wanneer ze niet langer afhankelijk zijn van melk en zich staande kunnen houden tegen de uitdagingen en bedreigingen waarmee ze in het wild te maken krijgen. Een re-integratie-eenheid is dus als een middelbare school of universiteit, waar de wezen hun wilde instincten kunnen aanscherpen en uiteindelijk kunnen terugkeren naar een vrij leven. Interessant is dat elke wees anders is en de olifantenmaatschappij verkent in een tempo dat voor hen werkt, en het zijn de wezen zelf die bepalen wanneer ze terugkeren naar het wild. Om deze weeskinderen een tweede kans op een leven in het wild te geven, hebben we drie re-integratie-eenheden als onderdeel van ons wezen project in het Tsavo Conservation Area, die een blauwdruk volgen voor rehabilitatie die voor het eerst door mijn moeder is vastgesteld. VOI is onze oorspronkelijke eenheid, gebouwd op dezelfde plek waar Daphne en David voor het eerst de geheimen ontdekten van het met de hand grootbrengen van weesmelk-afhankelijke wilde dieren. Het ligt in het oosten Tsavo, met oneindige vlaktes die zich uitstrekken zover het oog reikt. Het modderbad en de drinkplaats zijn een cruciale stop voor olifantenkuddes terwijl ze er doorheen trekken, waardoor er veel interactie is met de weeskinderen. In 2004 hebben we Ithumba toegevoegd, het juweel aan de kroon van Tsavo. De uitgestrekte, ongerepte wildernis die Ithumba te bieden heeft, bestaat gewoon niet meer in Kenia, en het is een echt toevluchtsoord voor olifanten, met wilde kuddes in het gebied waar ze de geruststelling hebben dat dit een plek is waar ze worden beschermd. Meer dan 60 weesolifanten zijn van hieruit teruggekeerd naar het wild, met 15 kalveren geboren uit vrouwelijke weeskinderen (dat weten we!). Ongelooflijk, en een bewijs van de sterke banden die zijn gesmeed tussen onze Keepers en hun wezen, kiezen deze wezen ervoor om hun nieuwe bundels vreugde slechts enkele uren na de geboorte met ons te delen, een ongelooflijk voorrecht. Ten slotte is er Umani Springs, speciaal gebouwd voor meer kwetsbare weeskinderen die onder onze hoede zijn. Een cast van ongelooflijk dappere personages die de kansen hebben overwonnen om vandaag bij ons te zijn, noemen Umani hun huis, overlevende van strik, geweerschot, speer en verminking door roofdieren. Hoewel sommigen misschien niet de grote afstanden kunnen afleggen die nodig zijn in meer ontvruchtbare omgevingen, hebben ze in het Kibwezi-bos voedergewassen en zoet water, bescherming en wilde kuddes direct voor de deur. Het is geen understatement om te zeggen dat de kudde hier door onbekend terrein raast. Belangrijk is dat dit gespecialiseerde centrum ons in staat heeft gesteld onze belofte na te komen die we aan elke wees doen, waardoor zelfs die olifanten die van alles zijn beroofd een vol leven en dieren in het wild kunnen leven, in een prachtige veilige omgeving die we beheren en beschermen, gepositioneerd binnen uitgebreid ongerept ecosysteem. Het moet gezegd worden dat het creëren van deze eenheden geen kleine taak is. Voordat we Ithumba oprichtten, installeerden we een 63 kilometer lange schrikdraad, waar dagelijks nog steeds over wordt gepatrouilleerd. We hielpen ook bij het herstel van het KWS-hoofdkantoor in het noorden en financierden benodigdheden zoals rangers 'accommodatie, kantoren en werkplaatsen, brandstoftanks, water opvang tanks, ontzilting en de installatie van een generator. Voor Umani werkten we jarenlang in het gebied door een concessie aan te nemen om het bos te beheren in samenwerking met de Kenya Forest Service en Kenya Wildlife Service, om illegale winningsactiviteiten te stoppen en ervoor te zorgen dat het de veilige haven voor wilde dieren werd die het nu is. Hoeveel dieren heeft u momenteel onder uw hoede? Er zijn momenteel meer dan 80 weesolifanten onder onze hoede, en niet te vergeten onze karakteristieke zwarte neushoorns Apollo en Maxwell. Deze laatste is blind aangeboren en heeft dus altijd een beschermd huis bij ons. Onze belofte om weeskinderen te redden, groot te brengen en opnieuw in het wild te integreren, is echter niet alleen een belofte aan olifanten - het is een belofte die we doen aan alle wilde weeskinderen die door onze zorg gaan. Er is dus ook een steeds groter wordende menagerie die wordt verzorgd op ons Kaluku Field Headquarters, inclusief een verweesde eland, oryx en mindere kudu, evenals Bristle, een verweesde struisvogel. Net als bij de weeskinderen van olifanten en neushoorns, zullen deze individuen in hun eigen tempo re-integreren in de lokale bevolking, hoewel velen ervoor kiezen om dicht bij hun menselijke familie te blijven. Naast de wezen projecten bestrijdt de DSWT actief stroperij. Kunt u een beetje uitleggen hoe het werkt? Het grootbrengen van olifanten is slechts een klein deel van wat we doen, want zonder voor het grotere geheel te zorgen, zou het zinloos zijn. We moeten weten dat wanneer deze babyolifanten weer het wild in gaan, samen met de Kenya Wildlife Service, beschikken wij over de middelen om ervoor te zorgen dat de wilde dieren worden beschermd voor de toekomst. Niet alleen de wezen, maar ook de reuzen van de vlakten die hen begeleiden. Daarom werken we met 16 anti-stroperij ranger teams in samenwerking met de Kenya Wildlife Service, afkomstig van mensen uit heel Kenia, die in de lucht worden ondersteund door een Air Wing. Deze volledig opgeleide en uitgeruste teams opereren in Tsavo en in Meru National Park om ervoor te zorgen dat er geen illegale activiteiten plaatsvinden, en als dat het geval is, kunnen we snel reageren. Het is een grote operatie, maar het is zo hard nodig. Houtkap, het stropen van bushvlees, bosbranden, grazende houtskoolverbranding, dit is allemaal zeer illegaal in beschermde gebieden en vormen een enorme bedreiging voor alle dieren in het wild, waardoor er minder ruwvoer en minder leefgebieden zijn. In een wereld waarin onze natuurlijke omgeving steeds meer een lappendeken wordt, is het van vitaal belang om deze resterende natuurlijke schoonheid te bewaren - niet alleen voor de wezen, maar ook voor alle dieren. Het is nu het elfde uur. We moeten er echt voor zorgen dat wat we over hebben, wordt bewaard voor toekomstige generaties. In de loop der jaren zien we ook steeds meer gevallen van conflicten tussen mens en natuur, waardoor het werk van ons Saving Habitats-project naar voren komt. En meer direct financieren wij vijf mobiele dierenartsenposten, onder leiding van KWS Vets, die in het hele land dringende veterinaire zorg verlenen aan dieren die gewond zijn geraakt door stropers en conflicten tussen mens en dier. Ze hebben tot nu toe 2.851 olifanten bijgewoond - een verbazingwekkend aantal, zij werken er keihard aan om onze kostbare olifantenpopulatie fit te houden, zodat dieren kunnen blijven rondzwerven op de vlakten zoals ze voorbestemd waren. Hoe benadert de DSWT duurzaam reizen? Al onze instandhoudingsprojecten zijn geworteld in respect voor onze natuurlijke wereld, dus het was logisch dat toen we onze Eco Lodges oprichtten, deze mantra de ervaring van een bezoeker zou leiden. Er zijn drie kampen in Ithumba, het noordelijke deel van Tsavo National Park dat door David Sheldrick als een "juweel in de kroon" werd beschouwd; twee op de Galana-rivier, een knooppunt voor de meest iconische soorten van Kenia; en één in het Kibwezi-bos, een weelderig grondwaterbos aan de voet van glooiende heuvels. Al onze Eco Lodges volgen hetzelfde sjabloon, dat weinig impact heeft en naadloos in de omliggende gebieden is ingebouwd, met speciale aandacht voor hun interieur, iets waar ik erg trots op ben. We verhuren elke Lodge aan maximaal 10 gasten, wat een exclusief verblijf en een aanpak garandeert die onze voetafdruk verkleint en ervoor zorgt dat eigendommen zijn ontworpen om de integriteit van de wildernis te behouden en het behoud te ondersteunen. This entire archipelago is covered with breathtakingly landscapes and extraordinary wildlife. When sailing these waterways, you will be daunted by your surroundings. Go into the woods in search for the brown bears, and spot humpback whales and orcas splash against a backdrop of glaciers and icebergs. Sail along the famed Inside Passage and find yourself in the middle of the rugged evergreen covered islands of the Archipelago. Sail through narrow fjords and wonder at massive glaciers. This voyage will provide an intimate look at the real Alaska and will let you experience this incredible phenomenon from one of the most unique positions in the world. On 14-March-2025, this extraordinary location will be the prime scene for a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon - the blood moon. It will be completely visible for more than a full hour. It will be seen rising over New Zealand and eastern Asia and setting over western Europe and western Africa. It will be the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2025. The moon will take place near apogee during this eclipse, making it appear smaller than usual. The second eclipse will take place on 7-September-2025, happening near perigee. Occurring only 3.4 days before apogee (Apogee on 17-March-2025), the moon's apparent diameter will be 5.4% smaller than average. She will be equipped with specialized scientific equipment never seen before on a superyacht. Onboard you will find eight cutting-edge research laboratories, a fully equipped dive centre and a crane attached to a trawl that will enable her to catch pelagic samples on a responsible and safe way and release the samples 3000 metres below sea level. She will be equipped with a highly advanced range of submersibles, both autonomous and remotely operated, for extreme underwater exploration. They will be easy to launch and to recover via a 7.7 x 5 meters opening in the hull known as a Moonpool. Alongside the research space, which equates to roughly 15 tennis courts, she will have all the amenities that yacht charter guests would expect on a yacht of this calibre, including three pool areas, well-equipped gym facilities and a spa and wellness zone. There will be a 36-person auditorium on board, plus 2 helipads, an on-board helicopter and its own hangar. The force behind REV Ocean Kjell Inge Røkke is the owner and driving force behind REV Ocean. Røkke grew up close to the VARD shipyard in the little fishing town of Brattvag where currently the REV Ocean is going through her final assembly. He learned to fish in the Norwegian waters and began his career as a deckhand on board a fishing trawler in Alaska. He launched his business career with the purchase of a 21 meters trawler in the United States in 1982, and gradually built a leading worldwide fisheries business owning his own fleet of fishing vessels and American Seafoods company. He became the largest stakeholder in Aker ASA and serves as chairman of Aker ASA, as well as a director of Aker BP, Kværner, Ocean Yield, Aker BioMarine and Aker Energy. Røkke's family has lived for many years in Molde, a small town just across the water from Brattvag and he is a well-known member of the local community. Juuni Vatne, Marketing Coordinator at VARD shipyard, commented: “I think it’s a lot of pride to be here, back home, to build this vessel.” The vision of REV Ocean Mr. Røkke’s motivation to construct and fund REV Ocean comes from a lifelong reliance on the ocean. Fishing is how he initially made his fortune; and now it’s time to give back. Building REV Ocean is philanthropy in its finest form. Also, with REV Ocean he wants to encourage yacht owners go down a similar route, then his legacy will live on for decades to come. Fishing is a vital profession to Norway’s economy as a whole, with fish being one of the country’s largest exports. Norway is leading the way in the fight against climate change, with the country listed among the greenest on the planet and the second-most eco-friendly country in the world. There is an impressive team to helm the REV Ocean research team. Nina Jensen, the former head of the World Wide Fund for Nature in Norway, has been appointed the Chief Executive of REV Ocean and Oxford University's leading marine conservation scientist Alex Rogers has joined the team as Science Director. Creating the opportunity to give back REV Ocean's primary function is oceanographic research and analysis. For many research teams and scientists, the cost of hiring research vessels with similar facilities is prohibitive. Lawrence Hislop, Communication Manager at REV Ocean, define the opportunity as “The idea is to get developing countries interested in the research work as well, [giving] opportunities to scientists in Africa, Asia, Latin America, who normally wouldn’t be able to [conduct research] on a yacht like this.” This unique funding model means that charterers can directly impact positive change. By chartering REV Ocean, they will be making these research missions possible. However, she will also be available to charter to companies like ours, Voyages & Journeys, looking for an expedition adventure. These independent charters will fund directly the research missions, allowing scientists to undertake pioneering research free of charge. This is a unique opportunity for clients to accompany the research teams, participating in research and observing the work being carried out in front of them. “The main point of having this vessel is to go out and do scientific research work. And the business model is to get people to [charter REV Ocean] and follow the research work and going to beautiful parts of the world." explains Lawrence Hislop, Communication Manager at REV Ocean. REV Ocean is planning to invite up to 400 marine scientists per year to spend three to four weeks each on board studying how to protect the ocean from climate change, overfishing and plastic waste. For the REV Ocean team, “healing the ocean with data” is a core part of their ethos. By allowing the most advanced oceanographic study tools to be accessed by research teams across the globe, the initiative hopes to create a global ocean data platform for the common good. First expeditions to take place When completed, REV Ocean will set sail on her maiden voyage to Svalbard for her first scientific mission in 2021. Then will be setting course to New York in the autumn, in a journey that will coincide with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. It is thought she may be positioned outside the United Nations Headquarters on the East River throughout the course of the event. Heading further south towards clearer oceans of the Caribbean, she will be heading towards the Galapagos archipelago, where opportunities are optimal for studying marine life. This island chain is home to hundreds of fish species, and REV Ocean intents to put her eco-harvesting system for live catch and release of biomass and pelagic samples to good use. She is also expected to head to the Indian Ocean, cruising around the islands of the Seychelles and the Maldives. Part of her hydrographic analysis in this region will be cantered around hydrothermal vents, which are clustered around the Central Indian Ridge between the two archipelagos.
