< Vorig Artikel Volgend Artikel >
- Sheldrick Wildlife Trust PT
Aventuras Únicas Expedições de Iate Explore Comunicações Sobre Nós EN PT NL Início - Comunicações - DSWT Sheldrick Wildlife Trust May-2021 Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa. Founded in 1977 by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE , in memory of her late husband, famous naturalist and founding Warden of Tsavo East National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE , the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust claims a rich and deeply rooted family history in wildlife and conservation. In 1948, David Sheldrick began his renowned career within the Royal National Parks of Kenya, where he worked unwaveringly for over two decades transforming Tsavo, a previously unchartered and inhospitable land, into Kenya’s largest and most famous National Park. David Sheldrick stands out, even today, as one of Africa’s most famous and proficient pioneer National Park Wardens. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is best known for their phenomenal work with elephants, operating the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. While the Orphans’ Project is the heart of the organisation, it cannot exist in isolation and over the last 40 years the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has developed an extensive, multi-faceted approach to conservation to ensure a greater and long-lasting impact for wildlife. Through their Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, they are continuously and actively safeguarding the natural environment and providing immediate assistance to wild animals in need. Their renowned Orphans’ Project allows them to respond and rescue orphaned baby elephants, rhinos, and all other wild species across Kenya, so that they might enjoy a life back in the wild when grown up. We had the amazing opportunity to ask a few questions to Angela Sheldrick . Daughter of David and Daphne Sheldrick, Angela was brought up in the wilds of Tsavo East. She has been exposed to Kenya’s wildlife and wild places all her life and heads The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and all its operations in Kenya and has done since 2001. Having a family DNA like yours, with your parents being pioneers in the field of Wildlife Conservation, we can only imagine the great life lessons passed on to you. Which values do you treasure the most until today? Growing up, immersed in nature, my family was much larger than just its human members. I grew up surrounded by an eclectic assortment of creatures, including Bunty the impala, Jimmy the kudu, and my special friend, Baby the eland. In this environment, I could not help but be instilled with a respect for our natural world. I grew up guided by a need to do better for all life that shares our beautiful world and to use one of my favourite quotes from my mum, “We only have one home, the Earth, and we as the dominant species must take care of it." In day to day, that means showing patience, empathy, determination to successfully rehabilitate orphaned elephants, courage and an ability to turn the page when, despite all our efforts, an infant might not pull through. Daphne was never daunted by a challenge and neither are we – taking in orphaned elephants that few believe might survive, or have a wild future, like Rama, our newest rescue who is a severely bow-legged little elephant. But we must always try. Then, there is the humbling lesson that despite our decades of wildlife conservation, we still have much to understand. My father, David Sheldrick, said it best: “The more one knows about animals, the more one realises how much we still have to learn." I have spent my entire life around elephants, yet they continue to astonish me in the very best way. We can all learn so much from these social species, committed as they are to family and nothing makes me prouder than watching the elephants in action: dependent orphans inquisitively meeting wild friends, bulls lazing in the mud bath, ex orphans arriving with their families in tow, calves gambolling between the legs of their nannies. Put simply, they never cease to amaze us and we shall never stop in our efforts to keep them safe. How many reintegration centres does the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) operate? It might first be helpful to explain what our pioneering Reintegration Units are and do. Our ultimate goal is for each orphan that we rescue is to transition from our care and return to the wild. But this must be at the right time, when they are no longer milk-dependent and can hold their own against the challenges and threats they will face in the wild. A Reintegration Unit then, is like College or University, where the orphans can hone their wild instincts and ultimately return to a free life. Interestingly, every orphan is different and explores elephant society at a pace that works for them – and it is the orphans themselves that determine when they return to the wild. To enable these orphans a second chance at a life in the wild, we operate three Reintegration Units as part of our Orphans’ Project in the Tsavo Conservation Area, which follow a blueprint for rehabilitation first established by my mother. VOI is our original Unit, built in the very same place that Daphne and David first discovered the secrets of hand-raising orphaned milk-dependent wild animals. It sits in Tsavo East, with unending plains stretching out as far as the eye can see. Its mud bath and watering hole is a pivotal stop for elephant herds as they migrate through, affording lots of interactions with the orphans. In 2004, we added Ithumba which is the jewel in Tsavo’s crown. The vast, unspoilt wilderness that Ithumba offers simply doesn’t exist in Kenya anymore, and it is a true haven for elephants, with wild herds in the area secure in the knowledge that this is a place where they are protected. Over 60 orphaned elephants have returned to the wild from here, with 15 calves born to female orphans (that we know of!). Incredibly, and testament to the strong bonds forged between our Keepers and their charges, these orphans choose to share their new bundles of joy with us only hours after birth – an incredible privilege. Lastly, there is Umani Springs, built especially for more vulnerable orphans in our care. A cast of incredibly brave characters who have surmounted the odds to be with us today call Umani home, surviving snare, gunshot, spear and maiming by predators. While some might not be able to cover the vast distances needed in more arid environments, in the Kibwezi Forest, they have forage and fresh water, protection and wild herds, right on their doorstep. It’s no understatement to say the herd here is blazing through uncharted territory. Importantly, this specialist centre has allowed us to deliver on our promise that we make to every orphan, enabling even those elephants who have been robbed of everything to live a full and wildlife, in a beautiful safe environment that we manage and protect positioned within an extensive unspoilt ecosystem. It should be said that creating these Units is no small task. Before establishing Ithumba, we installed a 63-kilometre electric fenceline, which continues to be patrolled daily. We also assisted in re-establishing the KWS headquarters in the North, funding necessities like rangers’ accommodation, offices and workshops, fuel tanks, water catchment tanks, desalination and the installation of a generator. For Umani, we had worked for years in the area taking on a concession to manage the forest in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service, to stop illegal extractive activities and ensure it became the safe haven for wildlife it is today. How many animals are currently under your care? There are currently more than 80 orphaned elephants in our care, not forgetting our characterful black rhinos Apollo and Maxwell. The latter is congenitally blind so will always have a protected home with us. However, our promise to rescue, raise, and reintegrate orphans back into the wild isn’t just one that we make to elephants - it’s a commitment that we make to all wild orphans who pass through our care. So there is also an ever-growing menagerie being cared for at our Kaluku Field Headquarters, including an orphaned eland, oryx and lesser kudu, as well as Bristle, an orphaned ostrich. As with the elephant and rhino orphans, these individuals will reintegrate into local populations their own pace, although many choose to stay close by to their human family. Next to the Orphans’ Projects, the DSWT is actively combating poaching. Could you explain a little bit how does it work? Raising elephants is just a small part of what we do because without taking care of the bigger picture, it would be futile. We need to know that when these baby elephants go back into the wild, we have the resources in place, together in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, to make sure that they’re protected for the future. Not just the orphans, but the giants of the plains that mentor them too. That’s why we operate 16 anti-poaching teams in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, drawn from people across Kenya, which are supported in the air by an Air Wing. These fully trained and equipped teams operate across Tsavo, and in Meru National Park, to ensure no illegal activities are taking place, and if they are, we are able to respond swiftly. It’s a big operation, but it’s so very needed. Logging, bushmeat snaring, bushfires, grazing charcoal burning – these are all illegal in conservation areas and present a huge threat to all wildlife, reducing forage and habitats. In a world where our natural environment is becoming increasingly patchwork, saving these remaining pockets of natural beauty is vital – not only for the orphans but for all animals too. It’s the eleventh hour now. We really have to ensure that what we have left is saved for future generations. Over the years, we are also seeing more and more cases of human-wildlife conflict which is bringing the work of our Saving Habitats project to the fore. And, more immediately, we fund five Mobile Vet Units, headed by KWS Vets, who provide urgent veterinary care across the country to animals injured by poachers and human-wildlife conflict. They’ve attended 2,851 elephants to date – an astonishing number, working to keep our precious elephant population fighting fit so animals can continue to roam the plains as they were destined to. How does the DSWT approaches sustainable travel? All our conservation projects are rooted in a respect for our Natural World so it made sense that when we established our Eco Lodges, this mantra would guide a visitor’s experience. There are three camps in Ithumba, the northern area of Tsavo East National Park that David Sheldrick deemed a “jewel in the crown”; two on the Galana River, a nexus for Kenya’s most iconic species; and one in the Kibwezi Forest, a lush groundwater forest on the base of rolling hills. All of our Eco Lodges follow the same template, that of low impact and built seamlessly into the surrounding areas paying special attention to their interiors as well, something I take great pride in doing. We let each Lodge out to a maximum of 10 guests, ensuring an exclusive stay and an approach that reduces our footprint and ensures properties are designed to preserve the integrity of the wilderness, and support conservation. What makes these lodges doubly special is that all proceeds from the Eco Lodges are reinvested into our field projects, and support our vital conservation efforts in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service. Guests can experience our lifesaving work first-hand: Each Eco Lodge sits within close proximity to one of our three Reintegration Units, and guests are granted access to visit the orphaned elephants there. «««« Check their fantastic adoption program and support this phenomenal organization: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans If you would like to visit or add it to your itinerary, contact us and let’s start plan your great next adventure. www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org www.instagram.com/sheldricktrust < Previous Article Next Article >

Aventuras Únicas Expedições de Iate Explore Comunicações Sobre Nós EN PT NL Início - Comunicações - Travel with the Family Experiential Travel with the Family February-2020 Searching the adventures with your kids (young or older) is incredibly rewarding for the entire family. If there is one thing that we have been noticing, is that families are more cautious in their approach towards experiential travel. For the last years is more usual to book a villa vacation or resort somewhere comfortable and close to a beach, enclosed in a relaxed environment. There is an undoubted difference in providing a childcare and stress-free atmosphere in the most remote and adventuress environments around the globe, that translates in mom and dad getting the deserved relax time while enjoying magnificent experiences hand-crafted for them. We take great pleasure in working with young generations, as we can see that it unlocks so much new potential. It is the greatest gift to educate the next generation about the beautiful ecological diversities and wildlife that our planet holds, while at the same time we alert them the terrible effects of climate change and the endangered species list that continue to expand. There is no better satisfaction than to witness a child exploring new habitats and being so excited about it. During the planning phase nothing changes for us, we still perform exhaustive research of every aspect of the journey to ensure that we cover every detail of safety and health. As you might have noticed by now, we really strive for a trustful relationship with each client and during our planning we keep close contact to shape it to client’s wishes. If requested we also look for au-pairs, tutors or babysitters to join the family, once we have understood the family needs and children’s likes and dislikes. We want to make sure that every member of the family gets involved in all activities, so that they can share those moments. We craft voyages that combine activities around the children’s school years, providing valuable education to use during or on upcoming school year. Depending on the time schedule of their school vacations we can take the family to destinations that offer plenty of variety. For example, it is amazing to travel around the Galapagos Islands, but we can turn it into a whole other experience if you are joined by a naturalist specialist in the local environment. Of course, there are certain adventures and environments that just are not suitable for children. If the possibility is there to ensure everyone can be involved in a journey, without compromising safety and health, we will make it possible. Our method to experiential travel assures that we provide an itinerary to meet every requirement of each family member to experience the extraordinary. < Previous Article Next Article >

Marsel’s images are famed for his mastery of composition, lighting, colour, and perspective. In his work he tries to simplify and to get rid of the extraneous – simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. In addition to winning the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Travel Photographer of the Year, and International Nature Photographer of the Year (twice), his awards include a First Prize in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, a First Prize in Nature’s Best International Photography Awards, twice the First Prize in the Travel Photographer of the Year, and several awards in Wildlife Photographer of the Year. His images are featured in galleries and museums, used worldwide in advertising and design, and he is a regular contributor to National Geographic. Where does your passion for photography comes from? I've always been a lover of nature. When I was a kid, I frequently went with my parents into the woods for long walks. At home we often watched films and documentaries about animals. Yet it took a long time before I started taking photography seriously. I didn't like it at art school, so then I ignored the subject. After graduating in graphic design and art direction, I got a job as an art director at a large advertising agency. In the fifteen years that followed, I collaborated extensively with selected photographers to shoot my campaigns. As a result, I was regularly on photo shoots and I learned a lot from that. I also learned to appreciate photography a lot more, and in the end, I bought a camera to take pictures during vacations. I soon found out that my photos weren't very good and I decided to look into it in more detail. Then it became a serious hobby that eventually got completely out of hand. The last three years of my career in advertising I had my own advertising agency which was quite stressful. Nature photography became the way to escape that stress for me. At one point I wondered if I couldn't be a better photographer because it seemed to make me a lot happier. When did you start combining photography with adventure? When my wife and I went on our honeymoon, we opted for a safari in Tanzania. For me that was the first time that I set foot in Africa, and the first time that I photographed wildlife. It made an undeniable impression on me, and from that moment on I was sure that I wanted to make it my job. I knew that would not be easy because fifteen years ago there was not much money to be made in my photography genre. During a brainstorming session with my wife, Daniella, we decided to organize special wildlife photography trips all over the world. At that time, this only happened on a very small scale, so we saw many opportunities there. It turned out to be the right choice because business has been going very well from the beginning of our company. Our starting point has always been that we only do things that make us happy. That has turned out to be a good strategy. When we no longer like a trip, we throw it out, even if it is financially unwise to do so. We both love photography, animals and nature, and travel, so this is the perfect combination for us. What is the most spectacular expedition / travel experience that you ever had? It is difficult to compare journeys because they are all very special in their own way. Our expedition in the Sahara through Algeria, Libya and Chad was really spectacular. I would like to do that again when peace has returned to the region. My most recent expedition to Socotra, Yemen, was also a special experience. Although there is a civil war raging the journey was by no means harmful. What is your dream voyage? In the end I would like to drive an overland truck around the world again, in search of unknown pieces of wilderness. (Now a question everyone wants to know ) What is your perfect camera setup to photograph wildlife? There is no perfect setup because the animals and the circumstances always differ. If animals are very shy, then I need long telephoto lenses, but if they are relaxed, I can sometimes even use a wide-angle lens. In principle, I love to show animals in their natural habitat, with a lot of attention to the beauty that surrounds them. My ideal nature photo is actually a beautiful landscape photo with an animal in it. That means that I prefer to shoot with shorter lenses because then I can show more of the landscape. A 24-70 / 2.8 or a 70-200 / 2.8 are ideal lenses for this. But in practice I mostly use my 180-400 / 4.0 with built-in 1.4x teleconverter for my animal photography. Usually, it is not possible to get close enough to wild animals to use short lenses. Is there anything exciting in the calendar for the future? Absolutely. I am currently working on a new book: MOTHER (a Tribute to Mother Earth). It will be a visual ode to nature and an overview of my best work of the past 15 years. No fewer than 394 pages and 244 photos, so a really bulky book. I've been working on it for over 10 months now, and I'm very happy with the result. It will be available worldwide on April 22. In addition, we had to postpone all our photo trips from 2020 to 2021 and 2022, while those years were almost full. For us, the upcoming two years will be all about non-stop travel and photography with a number of new destinations that we are very much looking forward to. I also have some personal projects in the waiting room, but they will have to stay there for the time being. < Previous Article Next Article >

Archaeologists, astronomers, anthropologists, marine biologists, professional photographers, naturalists and amazing conservation projects, the list goes on. Together with our unique network of specialists and industry partners, we outmanoeuvre the most challenging obstacles and turn them into exciting opportunities. (…)
The passion of travel curators Vanessa and Jasper from Voyages & Journeys surpasses the norm. Tempus Unieke Avonturen Jacht Expedities Ontdek De Numinous Wie Zijn Wij EN PT NL Home - V&J in de Media - Tempus Magazine Tempus Magazine January-2023 The passion of travel curators Vanessa and Jasper from Voyages & Journeys surpasses the norm. - Gemma Harris - A journey into Portugal's Alentejo All in the details; a chic stay at the rural Malhadinha Nova with unique travel curators, Voyages & Journeys. The passion of travel curators Vanessa and Jasper from Voyages & Journeys surpasses the norm. Even before meeting them face to face, I could tell they were in it because they genuinely wanted to improve travel experiences. The faultless and compassionate service from the outset reflected their personalities. They accompanied me on my transfer to our destination. The two-hour travel time from Lisbon allowed us to chat about their aim with Voyages and Journeys. The different paths they are taking from others and the values they hold close to help them find their edge in unique and once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences for clients. And for this journey? They were taking me to experience one of their favourites and Portugal's best-kept secret, Alentejo. Driving through Alentejo at sunset made the evocative natural scenery even more so, with pink glistening in between the rolling vineyards and cork farms which seemed to stretch for miles. Sporadically we would encounter a small village where things moved leisurely, and they undoubtedly embraced the slower pace of life. The kind of villages where locals always leave their doors open and unlocked explained Vanessa. A warm welcome Arriving at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova in the evening created even more intrigue that this wild region exuded. The bumpy transfer in one of the estate's characterful jeep defenders did not disappoint. On route through the estate, Jasper explained that it spread over 450 hectares with various houses complete with rooms and suites. Over time the ruins throughout this area have been transformed into luxury accommodations. I was welcomed into one of the estate's 30 rooms within the 'Home of the terracotta.' Artisanal design Waking up to the far-reaching view surrounded by vineyards held promise for the next two days spent on the estate. Finishing up a cappuccino in none other than Vista Alegre crockery and the in-house chef's speciality eggs on the terrace overlooking the pool, I was ready. The tour around the estate highlighted how Malhadinha uses architecture that perfectly complements the area's rurality with modernity. Each house has its own take on the Alentejo culture, filled with various pieces from local artisans. I even had the opportunity to try my hand at a craft while here, taking a bulrush workshop with a local artisan - safe to say my creations won't make it into a room, however insightful and fun all the same. Each interior has its personalised touches, from the handcrafted marble details, and locally crafted furniture to the creative lights made from recycled plastic. Family details Owned by the Soares family, Rita Soares, the CEO, was there pointing out her favourite spots, with even a glimpse into the new under-construction spa area, building yet more for the future on what is already an estate based upon strong family foundations. It is truly all in the details throughout, and you can see this family passion project is authentic, with Rita perfecting every design touch herself, even down to each room's scent. Like all good stories, the Soares family story began with wine, with their project starting with the plantation of the first 20 hectares of vineyards. The tour around Malhadina's wine-making facilities and cellars showed every bottle label drawn by the family's children; the cow by Matilde was my favourite! This charm continued throughout and into the wine-tasting experience. Tasting their complex yet elegant - which today are award-winning - wines confirmed that they had resulted in their dedication to their respectful and sustainable processes. Gastronomic secrets The wines were paired with one of the many farm to table experiences I had here. From the olive groves, orchards, and farms to the vegetable gardens, Malhadinha is rich in quality, organic produce grown using regenerative farming methods. The food truly put the cherry on top, especially the Alentejo black pork on decadent risotto. Or maybe it was the incredible apple tart that almost looked too good to eat. The chefs throughout the estate are true to traditions while putting their gastronomic twists and tweaks on each dish. One of the local Portuguese chefs has been in the family for the past 25 years, adding the best-loved family dishes to the estate's menu. If you fancy getting in the kitchen, you can take lessons at Malhadinha and learn from the best. Anything is possible As well as being introduced to various friendly and welcoming staff members and local artisans in my time here, I also got to meet the other equine family members. They weren't just any horses; these were pure-blood Lusitano horses you can ride throughout the vineyards. Aside from wine tasting and horseback riding, there is plenty to do here. On my stay, I met with Luisa, the guest experience manager and was reassured that pretty much everything and anything was possible at Malhadinha, purely restricted by the guest's imaginations and desires. Some popular experiences are hot air balloon rides over the Alentejo plains, romantic picnics within the vineyards, quad biking around the estate or even your own beekeeper experience. More than luxury In Alentejo, nothing is rushed, slowly but surely providing for future generations. These sustainability-minded values continue to be a focus throughout Malhadinha, staying honest to the region. It is more than a luxury retreat. Malhadinha provides a carefully designed, unique and authentic space where traditions are kept alive and experiences are second to none while balancing the needs and respect for nature. Everything here, like in the hands of Voyages & Journeys, feels right and is a profound step for luxury travel.

Jasper Sigon is the Co-founder of Voyages & Journey. He devises customized travel concepts for the high-end and executes them from A to Z. His goal? To let people discover the exceptional planet and create everlasting memories. Voyages & Journeys In late 2018, Jasper and his associate launched the exclusive travel agency Voyages & Journeys. Everything is arranged from A to Z: from a special safari in South Africa to heliskiing in Greenland, nothing is too crazy for them. "When a client approaches us, I first build a relationship of trust. Based on all the ideas and wishes that the client has indicated beforehand, I make three concepts. I present those concepts to the client and one concept comes out of that. Then our strengths emerge: my partner and I can also travel with the customer(s)," said Jasper. Unlike regular travel agencies, at Voyages & Journeys it doesn't stop immediately after conceiving and planning the trip, because Jasper and his partner continue until the best result is achieved. Best of the Best Over the years, Voyages & Journeys has had the opportunity to work closely with conservationists, biologists and naturalists. This has allowed exploration of the most undiscovered and ecologically diverse destinations around the world. On each trip, attention is paid to the smallest details to provide a unique perspective on biodiversity, wildlife, culture and traditions. MASTERS League "At the beginning of 2021, I joined the MASTERS League. I have been visiting MASTERS EXPO since 2017. A few weeks back I got the opportunity to join the League because the whole concept, the look and the accessibility attract me a lot. I had been looking to join something similar for a while. Especially to share my drive with other people and entrepreneurs I just find very interesting." »»» For the original publication click here ««« < Previous Article Next Article >

However, protecting these eco-systems comes at a horrifying cost – did you know that worldwide, more than 120 park rangers lose their lives every year to protect our global biodiversity and wildlife? These brave park rangers across the globe are led by true leaders, heroes and pioneers in conservation, such as Emmanuel de Merode from the Virunga Rangers, Sean Willmore from The Thin Green Line Foundation, Angela Sheldrick from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Leslie Howle from the Toucan Rescue Centre in Costa Rica, the amazing work from Titouan Bernicot with the Coral Gardeners on Mo’orea Island in French Polynesia, or Damien Mander with the International Anti-Poaching Foundation - these are just a few of many that share the passion of protecting our eco-systems. Through the unique adventures and journeys we design; you will be supporting these amazing organizations and foundations in their mission. While enjoying your vacation we also present the opportunity for you to join these organisations in the field, experience their daily activities and learn first-hand about their challenges and importance of their work. Head out side-by-side with anti-poaching and K9 units around the Serengeti or Maasai Mara national park; visit one of the most pioneering wildlife protecting and rehabilitation organisations around Tsavo National Park in Kenya where you may experience encounters with elephants and rhinoceros; or join park rangers and come face-to-face with mountain gorillas in Rwanda. These experiences will change your perspective of life forever. Learn how these organisations approach the local communities and educate them about the importance of wildlife conservation and preservation of the eco-systems, it’s so effective that poachers are now working for these organisations to protect the wildlife and their biodiversity. By now, most likely you will be thinking, “but how do I support these organisations with my travels ” – the answer is simple – throughout the last years we have built a database and good relationships with over 40 NGO’s, NPO’s and local conservation projects around the globe. After the proper due diligence process, we are confident that our donations are being used appropriately. When we finalize your travel itinerary, we combine the exceptional experiences we have created with local conservation projects, providing a unique insider access and experience about the destination you are visiting. With your visit you are directly supporting a conservation project, and in parallel we take a percentage from our earnings and donate it to that same conservation project. We try to select projects that fit with the theme of your journey – for instance, if you journey by sea, we will try to match it with an ocean conservation project. This process is performed in full transparency together with the client. Are you ready to explore the world of Voyages & Journeys? < Previous Article Next Article >
